  • Tutoring sessions are 50-minute sessions offered online through a video conferencing platform (Zoom, Google Meet or Classroom, or Microsoft Teams). In some instances, options for live, in-person sessions are available but limited.

Sessions are organized into five distinct components. Part One introduces the lesson with a focus activity, review, and goal setting. Part Two uses direct instruction with recalling of prior learning and scaffolding of new learning. Part Three uses guided instruction with coached thinking that offers solutions and heightens understanding. Part Four utilizes independent instruction with assessments and checks for understanding. Part Five closes the session with a student-led daily reflection that gears the end of the current lesson to the beginning of the next lesson, creating a continuous, student-directed, student-driven learning experience.

  • Instructional approach: Built on the mini-learning objective model, sessions are created using backwards alignment. This means that the session focuses on the end-goal--what the student must know or be able to do--and then work backwards, identify and building the skills and knowledge necessary to achieve that goal. Using the tutor instructional approach’s emphasis on deep learning as well as directed and guided instruction, students are encouraged to think about what they are learning as they think about how and why they are learning as well. Inquiry-driven and skills- and strategies-based, sessions actively engage students with scaffolded activities and an open tutor-student dialogue that achieves students’ SMART goals.

Behavioral approach: Sessions are formal learning events focused on the instruction, enrichment, or remediation of the student. Therefore, the same expectations of the classroom apply. Students are expected to attend all sessions and be prompt, attentive, engaged, and mature throughout the entire session. Completing all assignments, including those that are skill- or disciplined-based, are the student’s responsibility as each session holds the student as learner and the tutor as facilitator. A student’s failure to comply with these expectations may result in cancellation of a session or termination of all services.
